Whitney Klinke is a 33 year old working mom who wakes up every day exhausted and overwhelmed from yesterday attempting to refresh and make each day amazing for her family. Simply being a mom can be the hardest job in the world, working on top of it takes a strong woman. Whitney says “I am myself first and then a wife and mom second. Being a mom doesn’t define me. I feel I can be a better mom and a wife if I am a happy and healthy person first.” She stresses the importance that above everything else she needs to be herself, She needs to be consistently filling her cup to pour into others. Whitney is a resident of Washington IL and works at a location church as a children’s pastor. Her day starts bright and early getting her two young children ready for school. Once they are ready then she then gets to go be herself. Whitney says “I am a follower of Christ and a child’s pastor. I make sure Sunday’s are prepared for and my leaders are equipped and happy.” Everyday at work for her is different, sometimes meetings, other days printing and prepping, some days writing messages, and the others are spending intentional time with the leaders above her and under her in order to grow others and herself within the church. Whitney states that “Working in ministry isn’t easy by any means.” She is constantly giving up herself for others as well as in the light being questioned and judged by others for her beliefs, although she does it because she feels called to and loves Jesus more than anything. After the work day, Whitney doesn’t get to go home and relax, much like most all other moms. She heads home but most days that’s when the craziness begins. She cleans the house, cooks dinner, helps with homework, run kids to all their activities, attempts to spend time with her family all together, and then gets everyone ready for bed. “My job is never done. But I enjoy it. I love the mess. I love the chaos and I wouldn’t have life any other way.” Whitney is a hero because working isn’t easy, being a mom isn’t easy, and doing both is definitely not easy. But she wakes up every day with a positive outlook on life striving to be her best self for herself, for her co-workers, and for her family.

The dish that I decided to make and photograph is a Czechoslovakian traditional dish called Haluski Kapusta. I chose to make this dish because my grandpa’s family is from the Czech Republic, his grandfather moved from there to Streator IL and this history of my family always has interested me. I knew this dish was a popular one within my family however I have never made it before. My grandma loves to cook so, for this assignment I knew right away what my idea would be. Haluski Kapusta is made of noodles, cabbage, butter, onions, and lots of salt and pepper. Haluski Kapusta is often used during Lent because it is a very flavorful meatless dish. Through the process of making this meal I learned a lot about adjusting the White Balance as well as ISO as I was inside photographing trying to balance indoor Tuscan lighting mixed with natural life from the windows. This assignment shows the process of the ingredients needed, the steps to cook it, the small mess it makes, and the delicious final product. I loved spending time with family preparing this dish as well as learning even more about my family history in the process.

Sequential Narrative/Process Steps
This series shows the process of grinding coffee. These pictures are very subtle in the differences they take, however the the end product is much different in the amount that it can produce of coffee compared to the beans in the start. This project taught be able angles as well as placement of the camera. When I decided to shoot straight on, I soon came to the realization that hands in the center of the frame would effect how the image turned out. I had to work with the subject and hands to make them look nice in the photo but still be able to show what the steps to grinding coffee were. Being indoors I had to have a higher ISO or else the shutter speed would’ve been extremely slow.
This series shows a game of pool. Beginning with the idea of playing pool, then setting up the game, grabbing a stick, playing, then the final outcome. Many images are important to capture this idea. This project taught me more about how much you have to add into your photos to really be able to tell a story through them. I feel these photos could have a few more elements in them to be narrative such as another person. Lighting was also included in my learning process with these photos because every though there is a window, these were taken in a basement and with the ISO being higher, the shutter speed was lower and it was a struggle to capture movement without blur.
Image Journal-Variation
I had a lot of fun with this image journal looking for lots of variety in things around me to photograph. Looking back at my pictures I realized that I really liked finding variety in colors. Although, that thought is interesting, because my favorite picture of all of these pictures is the different sizes of the jars. I love this photo because of where the window was located in my house it reflected off the jars and with my camera settings created an old fashion type look. I love the jars image and feel that it captures the purpose of this image journal well. Another one of my favorite photos is the candy hearts. I love this photo because it is simple, clean, and has order in it. The angle that I came from taking this photo works great with the light from behind giving the hearts each a dramatic shadow. All of these photos I look inside which brought my biggest struggle which was lighting. I learned more about ISO and adjusting the shutter and aperture to help me balance the ISO in order to not put it up too high. Overall, this journal was really fun to create and got me paying more attention to the variation in things I didn’t even realize had it. The last photo is of citrus fruits organized by color. I liked this image from another artist because I am draw to variation photos with lots of bright colors which this has along with changing shapes.

Image Journal #2 Line and Movement

This is a photo up close of a wooden Christmas tree. The zig-zag line draws the eye straight through the photo, however I feel the wood detail and color keeps the eye wanting more. I would fix the lighting so there is no shadows.

This photo shows downward movement starting with lines at the top and objects getting heavier moving down the photo. If I were to recreate this photo I would add more lighting.
Shutter:1/25

This photo has lots of types of lines drawing the in in many places of the picture. This object creates lots of movement as well. I would adjust the focus on this photo if recreated.

This photo is a string of stars which have movement carried through the photo. If I were to recreate this photo I would maybe shoot some different angles.
Shutter: 1/13

This is a photo up close of a chair. There is lots of different lines to draw the viewers eye through the picture. The angle and focus of the camera are two things I might change about this photo.
Shutter: 1/800

This photo shows movement upwards using raindrops. The angle of the raindrops looks good however I might wait longer and let the raindrops build up more water to show more depth.
Shutter: 1/30
f: 5.0
Iso:200
This photo shows line movement and repetition keeping the eye in the photo with two layers of detail. If I were to recreate this photo again I would adjust the angle of the camera possibly using a tripod

This photo is of a table with a very detailed design on it. The lines within the design draw the eye from the bottom right corner and spread throughout the rest of the photo. I would fix the focus in this photo.
Shutter:1/25
f:5.6
Iso:200
This photo is of a chair with many lines coming from different angles going towards the same direction. I might adjust lighting to get rid of the shadows or make the shadows accent the chair to create more line.
Shutter: 1/15

Iso:800
This is a photo of baseballs lines up to create a circular motion though out the photo. If I were to recreate this photo I would play a little more with the lighting to help this photo become even brighter.

Image Journal #1 (Motion)

Cellphone Photo
This image of espresso shots being pour’d is rich in color and captures the movement very clearly. Trying multiple angles could have created more unique photo opportunities.
Cellphone Photo
This image is of steamed milk being pour’d to complete a latte. Changing the aperture on a camera could have made this image more dynamic with a blurred background.
Cellphone Photo
This is an image of a coffee grinder grinding beans. The falling grounds caught in action gives this photo a lot of movement. If taken on a camera I would set the aperture that way only the grounds were in focus.
Shutter: 1/50
f: 6.3
ISO: 100
This is an image of a dog jumping vertically. Using a tripod could have created a more clean photo with the dog in motion and the background sharper.
Cellphone Photo
This is a photo of hands under running water. If using a camera I could have changed the aperture to make the background less clear and the water the only object in focus.
Cellphone Photo
This photo is of a girl cartwheeling.
The timing of this photo was well done, however the clarity of her feet could be more sharp. Also the angle of the photo could have been changed to create less distraction.
Cellphone Photo
This is an image of a girl jumping with excitement. The only thing I wish to change about this photo is the clarity of all parts of her body, mainly her feet.
Cellphone Photo
This image is of a boy spinning hula hoops around his arms. The timing of this photo worked well with the movement of the hula hoops.
Cellphone Photo
This is an image of a child sliding down a slide. If I could change anything about this photo I would have the child more in focus with details of him blurred to show the speed instead of his phone body as a blur.
Cellphone Photo
This image is of a boy throwing legos in the air. The timing of this photo was done well. I love the clarity of his happy face in the middle of the blur of the falling legos.

This is an image of a light bulb being shattered. I chose this image from Desmond Downs Blog on shutter speed. This image spoke to me because although it is a photo, it speaks loudly with the visual noise created from the shatter. The Shutter speed, Aperture, and ISO had to have worked together perfectly with dramatic lighting to create this photo with such precision.
